Four Flies are proud and honoured to release the first vinyl reissue of Bruno Nicolai’s outstanding original score for GEMINUS, a 1969 Italian TV mini-series directed by Luciano Emmer and starring Walter Chiari, Alida Chelli, and Ira von Fürstenberg.
Originally released under Italian label Gemelli, Nicolai’s soundtrack has been remastered from the original master tapes and comes in a glossy, tip-on style jacket featuring the restored original cover artwork, as well as extended liner notes by film critics Francesco Cesari and Roberto Curti.
Bruno Nicolai composed and directed an eclectic score that brings together different music genres and influences, from 60s beat, psych, and progrock to baroque and experimental music. He did not hesitate to mix classical forms and structures with new instruments andremarkable, eccentric arrangements.
In ‘Giano’ (Janus), the interplay between a distorted electric guitar and a hypnotic harpsichord creates a strange, somewhat troubling ambience.
The delicate, celestial voice of Edda Dell’Orso leaves its unique emotional imprint on the most lyricalpiece in the soundtrack, ‘Tema Barocco’ (Baroque Theme).
The main theme ‘Il cielo cade’ (The Sky Is Falling) features a luxurious arrangement and stunning orchestration enhanced by enchanting vocal harmonies sung by ‘I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni’.
In other pieces, such as ‘Larve’ (Larvas), ‘Il sognatore’ (The Dreamer), ‘Eclisse di luna’ (Moon Eclipse), ‘Visioni’ (Visions), ‘Catacombe’ (Catacombs), and ‘Notti romane’ (Roman Nights), expressive and experimental solo passages played by instruments such as the vibraphone, sitar, harmonica, or percussions, contribute to the sombre, mysterious atmosphere of the score as a whole.
Limited edition, 500 copies worldwide.

Four Flies is pleased to introduce for the first time on vinyl another top level score for the Italian slasher/crime flick directed by Sergio Martino, “The Suspicious Death of a Minor” (Morte sospetta di una minorenne).

Perhaps the best Luciano Michelini score ever (a composer well-known to Italian soundtrack enthusiasts for his famed RCA works – “Anna – Quel particolare piacere” and “La conquista di Luna”), and for sure one of the toughest of the whole genre.

The main theme echoes certain passages from Goblin’s “Deep Red” – recognizable by the use of the same church organ located in the historic Ortophonic Studio in Rome in 1975, only a few months after Claudio Simonetti’s hands played it for Dario Argento’s masterpiece. That said, the entire soundtrack sounds somehow “Goblinesque”, thanks to the prog-rock & funk action themes that are used for chases, murders, and suspense scenes.

Remastered from the original reels preserved in the C.A.M. archives, this vinyl edition features new LP editing, and is housed in a hard tip-on sleeve with a stunning artwork designed by Luke Insect.

A QUIET PLACE TO KILL

10” vinyl
Previously unreleased
Limited edition 400 copies

TRACKLIST:

A1 – You
A2 – Paranoia – M3 (main theme)
A3 – Paranoia – M40 (chasing scene)
B1 – You (Titoli)
B2 – Paranoia – Seq. 1 (action scene)

Four Flies is proud to present another sensational find buried for far too many years and very in demand by every Umiliani enthusiast worldwide. Recovered from original reels, and presented for the very first time on a refined 10’’ vinyl, here are 5 tracks from the highly sought-after recording session of “Paranoia”.
This was the second collaboration for director Umberto Lenzi and composer Piero Umiliani, and the second chapter of the sexy thriller Baker trilogy, a.k.a. abroad as “A Quiet Place to Kill”.
Once for all, we can officially forget the original film credit titles, to whom the musical score is credited to one Gregoria Garcia Segura (named just for co-production reasons), and confirm that all the tracks were composed and arranged by Piero Umiliani, who also conducted his orchestra.
A great score finally resurfaces: from action-jazz to psychedelic feel, with the special gem of the opening title song, the extraordinary “You”, sung by the delightful voice of Shirley Harmer, which is undoubtedly one of the most moving things Umiliani has ever written; an orchestral pop-jazz ballad whose every chord is filled with class and sensuality… and still gives us goosebumps.

Organ: Antonello Vannucchi

Four Flies digs harder and deeper! This missing soundtrack by Piero Umiliani par excellence, and considered by many to be lost, is finally fully recovered on six master tapes which contain the original complete recording sessions!
“Orgasmo” (better known worldwide as “Paranoia”) is the first chapter of the famous giallo trilogy that Umberto Lenzi filmed starring former “Baby Doll” Carroll Baker, depicting a story of diabolical lovers and shady intrigues which reechoed certain morbid atmospheres with which Henri-Georges Clouzot tried his hand with his “Les Diaboliques” (1956). Co-starring Lou Castel – who starred in “Fists in the Pocket” and other ‘committed’ films, and therefore was considered a rebel, and the young Colette Descombs, who often steals the scene from the main actress, Baker.
Recorded just after “Sweden, Heaven of Hell”, when Umiliani had taken a definitive step into the golden phase of his career and reached the top of his compositional skills, the “Orgasmo” score is an actual gem of grace and elegance – a manifesto of seduction that constitutes one of the main assets for Lenzi’s film.
With this work, Umiliani managed to perfectly capture the film’s morbid side, psych(edel)ic deliriums, and pop ambiance. Some of the music’s attributes, such as Alessandro Alessandroni’s and his wife Giulia’s vocal work, or the major role played by Antonello Vannucchi’s Hammond organ, foreshadow the atmospheres of “Five Dolls for an August Moon.”
The whole film score shines with an unusual light for a thriller, and reverberates with the light and brilliance reminiscent of Brazil’s music, such as wonderful and inspired bossa nova or samba-jazz versions, with which the main themes were arranged.
On top of that, the sublime Lydia MacDonald sings the superb title track, “Fate Had Planned It So.” A more rhythmical take on this track, along with the dancing soul tune “Just Tell Me”, sung by Wess, comes alone with a new 7’’ limited edition, available in 300 copies (both songs are not included in the LP version of the soundtrack).
Another piece of Piero Umiliani’s outstanding musical legacy is finally now ready to shine again!

A DOPPIA FACCIA

 First vinyl issue
Exclusive liner notes by Nora Orlandi
Artwork by Luke Insect

Four Flies Records is proud to unearth another classic soundtrack from the world of Italian giallo with Nora Orlandi’s incredible score to Riccardo Freda’s 1969 film “A Doppia Faccia” (a.k.a. “Liz & Helen”). Starring Klaus Kinksi, Margaret Lee, and Annabella Incontrera, the film was based on a story by Italian king of the macabre Lucio Fulci.
For the first time ever on vinyl, Orlandi’s mysterious and charming soundtrack leads off with a sensuous main theme – a powerful track with a great harpsichord chord progression and a melody that really stands out.
Maleficent sounds, gothic atmospheres, and alarming voices make the soundtrack captivating yet disturbing at the same time.
The tracklist also includes the uptempo “beat-at-cinecittà” classic “Soho”, used to accompany the ever-present party scene in the psychedelic, swinging London of the time. The soundtrack also contains a proto-version of the more famous “Dies Irae”, from “Lo strano vizio della signora Wardh”, which inspired Quentin Tarantino for “Kill Bill – Vol. 1”.
The release features liner notes by Nora Orlandi herself and stunning artwork by Luke Insect.

4 years later than “Volume 1”, and two years after “Volume 2”, here is the final and last in the series “Esterno Notte Vol. 3”. The trip continues through the unexplored lands of the Italian cinematic groove, unearthing new pearls buried for too long. While the previous chapters consisted of lost jazz-funk materials, mostly recovered from the mythical Italian RCA archive, this time this new volume concerns more in frightening and amazing tunes, used for horror, thriller, erotic and violent-pop movies.
The result is a deep journey into the secret history of the second half of the 70’s Italian soundtracks, focusing on sounds that were designed for cityscape chases, high-tension scenes, erotic nights, haunting and dream-like sequences.
A collection of stunning jazz-funk, cinematic prog and urban disco, unveiling rare or unreleased tracks composed by some of the hip names of the Italian Scene: Alessandro Alessandroni, Pippo Caruso (performed by Goblin), Stelvio Cipriani, Guido & Maurizio De Angelis, Bixio-Frizzi-Tempera, Gianni Oddi, Carlo Savina, Alessandro Blonksteiner, Franco Godi, Sergio Chiti & Gian Paolo Montori.

This retro-futuristic Italian classic from the cosmic era is now finally reissued in a double LP edition that will surely bring joy to DJs worldwide. Underrated jazz musician and composer Gianni Safred is one of the great pioneers of Italian electronic music, and had proven his talent in a couple of ultra-rare and highly sought-after library records released by renowned Italian label Music Scene. FUTURIBILE was the second of the batch, composed and recorded in 1978 in his Trieste-based studio, using Minimoog, Polymoog, Arp Odyssey, Arp Omni, Fender Rhodes, Sequencer Roland, Space Echo Roland, and accompanied by a solid drum section. And what if the infamous UNDERGROUND and OVERGROUND albums had a third psychedelic chapter, still secret and unreleased until today?
Yes, you heard correctly: this SUPERGROUND LP is sonically akin to the legendary pair for which composer Sandro Brugnolini will always shine worldwide, and ideally brings the trilogy to a close. Composed and recorded in two sessions between July 1969 and November 1970, the album echoes the shocking 1969’s Charles Manson massacre, with tracks dedicated to the villa at Cielo Drive, in Hollywood, where Sharon Tate e Roman Polanski lived for six months. Some music was also used for an animated short movie signed by Pino Zac, “Radice Quadrata di 3”, a little art-film gem about the consumer society.
The recordings have all in common the terrific line up, featuring MARC 4 members Antonello Vannucchi (organ), Maurizio Majorana (bass), Roberto Podio (drums), along with Angelo Baroncini (guitar) replacing Carlo Pes. An incredible groovy combo that plays a strange psychedelic rock and r’n’b with funky and prog flavor.
Another lost masterpiece from Italian golden age soundtracks finally rescued and brought back in life to see the light of the wax for its very first time.

Maybe the best Alessandroni’s album ever. A true holy-grail for any collector and worldwide music lover, which we can consider nowadays as the most sought-after record of the whole legendary RCA SP 10000 series, and as the rarest album from the king of Italian libraries.
Jazz, mellow-funk, downtempo breaks, and incredible rock blends, make this record a refined portrait of the 70’s American way of life, viewed through the fully Italian lens of Alessandroni’s sensitivity.
The magic around Spontaneous is that this album is not only beautiful and astonishing, but is certainly on of those amazing records to which time gives new life and freshness, making it sounds unbelievably contemporary.
After five years of exhausting research, finally Four Flies can give a light to this obscure and fascinating mistery, rescuing it from the darkness. It’s not just another piece of Alessandroni’s legacy that is finally put back in the right place. This should be considered as the definitive act to re-estabilsh Alessandroni’s leadership into the library music scene, and beyond.

If a jewel were to be chosen from among the more than three hundred soundtracks composed by Maestro Stelvio Cipriani during his long and prodigious career, the choice would probably fall, rather than on the now super famous ANONIMO VENEZIANO, on this previous and somewhat less celebrated score: FEMINA RIDENS, which, together with MARK IL POLIZIOTTO is one of Cipriani’s most iconic titles. Indeed, this is one of those soundtracks that best represent the spirit of Italian golden age film music, and the original LP, published on CAM series SAG – 9017, is at the very top of every collector’s most wanted list.

Cipriani perfectly captured the mood of Piero Schivazappa’s 1969 film, a feminist parable blending eroticism with black humor and Pop Art. The maestro combined classical music, orchestral pop and baroque jazz with spaghetti western, psychedelic blues and lounge vibes – all of this with sumptuous arrangements that still sound contemporary. “Mary’s Theme” is an immortal, timeless track – it has been sampled in contemporary hip-hop productions – and shows the eternal modernity of the finest Italian cinematic sound.

This reissue finally makes available again an iconic soundtrack that remained inaccessible on wax for way too long. And it does so in the best possible way, starting from the original master tapes preserved in the CAM archives, where it was possible to locate an unreleased track, now added at the end of side B. An enhanced version of “Chorus and Brass Fugato”, whose original edit has been improved and extended, is also included. And as if that weren’t enough, Four Flies also released an extra 7-inch record featuring the two most danceable tracks on the entire OST!

LE MONTAGNE DELLA LUCE

Pressed on 12″
3 tracks previously unreleased
OUT ON 12 APRIL 2019

TRACKLIST:

A1 – KILIMANGIARO
A2 – KUKUMBE
A3 – WAYOMBE

B1 – KILIMANGIARIO (SPOKEN ALT. TAKE)
B2 – NAIROBI

Romolo Grano (composer) and Gianni Oddi (arranger and conductor) join forces for a trippy and funky journey exploring both the heart of Africa, and its deepest mysteries.
Originally composed for an Italian TV Documentary in 1975 and released on a very rare and sought after 7-inch on the Ricordi Label (SRL 10781), this score finally shines again in a new guise thanks to a collaboration between Four Flies Records and the renowned music publisher Flipper Music.
Besides the two tracks pressed on the original 45, we present here for the first time three new cuts that were recently discovered in the archives. Edda Dell’Orso lends her voice on the leading track “Kukumbe” with her unique scat style, but also sings on “Kilimangiaro” – a dreamy cinematic number spiced with cosmic electronics, and presented here as a double version; the newest powered by the spoken words of an unidentified Italian actress. The biggest surprise is “Nairobi”, a wonderful mid-tempo track with a groovy bassline similar to “Kukumbe” – a gem we’ve missed for way too long. And what about “Wayombe”? A lovely afro-funk downtempo cut driven by the great Oscar Valdambrini’s trumpet, in the style of Gianni Oddi’s most wanted, like “Ho incontrato un’ombra” and “Dreamin’”. An unmissable beauty for any serious DJ/collector.

And furthermore, kriminal beats, spy-exotic flavours, and dreamlike suspense, as well as the unmistakable voices of I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni.

Four Flies launches its new jazz series dedicated to top Italian soundtracks from the 1960’s with this extraordinary work by Piero Piccioni: 3 NOTTI D’AMORE (3 Nights of Love). Originally released in 1964 on CAM – CMS series, this record had a very limited pressing, and is considered one of the grooviest and jazziest scores composed by the legendary Italian maestro. Thanks to the support of an exceptional big band, Piccioni shapes a unique cool style, supported by a truly exotic and percussive rhythm section (“Come on Rome”, “Just For Fun”), full of charming flute phrases (“The Easy Way”) and baritone sax passages (“Pop’s Lolly”), and beautifully played by the two great soloists, Gino Marinacci and Gato Barbieri. Piccioni himself plays the piano on all the tracks, and created a magnificent, dynamic and sophisticated soundtrack. Pressed for the first time in its integrity, this soundtrack includes some missing numbers from the original record, and presents others in their extended full versions, such as “Sally’s Surf” (compiled in the essential Easy Tempo series). A superb album featuring marvelous tracks – from bossa to pop-jazz – this original soundtrack also features a couple of tracks by Carlo Rustichelli; two dreamy, sensually vocalized melodies. One of Piccioni’s lesser known masterpieces that truly embodies that golden time period, and a real beauty for every 60s jazz lover.

Just say Background Disco and you’re quickly reminded of the super-groovy sound that pervaded certain sequences of 1970’s Italian films, generally set in discos or clubs with a strong presence of music. Soul, disco, and funk tracks playing in the background, between a dance on the floor and a glass of J&B at the counter, that were supposed not to overcome the dialogues. Two of these jewels, signed by Alessandroni for the sexy comedy FRITTATA ALL’ITALIANA (1976, Alfonso Brescia) and previously released by our label in the collection LOST & FOUND (Four
Flies Records 2017), definitely deserve the upgrade to the 12’’ format.
Therefore, they are proposed in a new edit designed for the dancefloor, each in a double version: the sung one (by
lesser known Lorena, a member of Alessandroni’s vocal band I Cantori Moderni) and the instrumental one.
